Hats off to the Lyric Stage League for putting on a perfectly brilliant exhibition of horses
and hats at the League’s “Lyric-A-Polo” event this October at the Las Colinas Polo Club
(LCPC) Nothing is more beautiful than fall in Texas...add a large open field with sport horses,
a gathering of friends and family dressed for Sunday, a little food and champagne and you
have the Lyric Stage’s first polo affair.
And in keeping in theme with the motif, most of the ladies donned big, beautiful hats and
competed for the “Best in Show”. Sandy Ferney took the grand prize of a beautiful glass
pumpkin by customizing her straw hat with small horse and riders and a large treble clef up
front supporting the League was excellent. (Although I have to give a shout out to Jane
McGinnis, the League’s board president, who couldn’t enter the contest, but wore an exquisite
hat - see back page).
Ann Goin at Glory House did a fantastic job with the catering and our trusty server made
sure everyone’s glass was full for the champagne toast and divot dash. In between chukkers
everone participated by “touching up” the field with pushing the divots back in place. And if
you don’t know what a chukker or a divot is see www.lascolinaspolo.com and find out.
“I like that the announcer explains the rules as he calls it,” said Cathy Whiteman, producer
and host for ICTN’s About Town. “It’s wonderful to watch the game and enjoy such a nice day
with such nice people. What a great venue. Everyone should make it out here on Sundays.”
Lisa Starkweather, 2nd VP for the League’s board, chaired this event with the help of the
LCPC’s Sue Utter, to make it what will surely become an annual event.
