There are simple design rules that every web site should follow. Most of these rules have developed to help readers of your site be able to quickly navigate through to information they find relevant.

Look to the right. Do you have a web site that currently looks anything similar to this? If you do, you have finally come to the right place. Sites like these were rampant during the beginning of the internet as people with little design sense rushed to churn out as many pages as possible for anyone willing to pay for them.

But things have changed!

Web sites can now be sleek and well organized. There should be no bad contrast colors like our culprit up there, making your customers read green text on yellow background. It is hard on the eyes and even harder for a customer to trust you know what you are doing.

Some things to avoid: Tables, frames, bad color combinations and over or undersized pictures are just a few of the problems that most web sites have. These are, in computer terms, ancient technology. Any site using scrolling text (marquees) or any of these other techniques are viewed by internet savvy consumers as out of touch. Customers want space used wisely, navigation that makes sense and quick information.

Remember, the internet is a research tool: The main thing to remember is that the internet is used as research. If someone stumbles on your site and has their senses assaulted by loud obnoxious noises or colors that make their stomach turn, they aren't going to stick around to find out why you are the best company to solve their problem. You have to bring them in with the design and keep them there with what makes your company so great. A web site is hands down the best marketing tool you will ever have, use it wisely and it will bring in customers.

I want to look fancy though: The bells and whistles have changed a lot on the internet in 10 years.
